Decision first: if you only have a half-day after CBD or North Shore traffic, do not commit to the commonly published ~20 km East Ryde / Buffalo Creek to Thornleigh Lane Cove section as one push. Cut to a named day section with a bailout carpark, or switch to Heritage Walk / riverside segments. Finishing strong beats a GPS track that proves you started too big.

Planning from official NSW National Parks and published GNW public notes — not a walked diary. Distances, diversions and creek conditions change; verify before you go.

What failed

The trap is map proximity. Lane Cove sits ~10–11 km from the CBD, so visitors assume alpine-scale days still fit. Grade 3 steps, heat, muddy creek crossings after rain and patchy reception punish optimism. Stacking Heritage Walk interpretive stops onto the same morning makes it worse.

Cut rules before you lace up

Pick one: (1) a short signed picnic/riverside segment with a clock, (2) Heritage Walk only, or (3) a single GNW day section with a verified public-transport or second-car exit. If overnight is the real goal, book Discovery Parks – Lane Cove directly — there is no bush camping elsewhere in the national park.

After heavy rain, treat creek crossings as likely failure points. Alerts and on-track diversion tape beat yesterday’s optimistic blog.

Pairing ban

Do not pair full one-way GNW + multi-lawn picnic hop + boatshed lunch fantasy on a first visit. Culture corridor and picnic days are separate products from section-hike days.

FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Can fit walkers still do a GNW taste in a half-day?

Yes — as a named out-and-back or short link with a hard turnaround, not as the full published Lane Cove one-way. Carry water and a map either way.

Where do I overnight if I want two section days?

Discovery Parks – Lane Cove at 13 Plassey Road, Macquarie Park is the practical commercial base. Book with Discovery Parks; this site never takes commission on that booking.
