How long do I need?

Typical planning ranges (light traffic, not a clocked diary): the park sits roughly 10–11 km from the Sydney CBD. Door-to-door from inner suburbs is often 25–45+ minutes each way once you count lights and North Shore congestion; from further west or south, budget more. Weekend mornings still punish late leavers even when the map looks “close”. People who should not attempt a stacked day-trip: anyone leaving after 10am on a fine weekend hoping for empty weir parkingand a full Great North Walk section before dinner.

Vehicle entry fees apply in most drive-in cases via official Park’nPay / NSW National Parks channels. Planning figures at research time: ~$8/day vehicle; bus ~$4.40 adult / $2.20 child per day [VERIFY]. Walking / cycling in is commonly free. Annual Multi Parks / All Parks passes may be valid — confirm officially. Groups of 30+ need written approval from the park office. Picnic-area venue hire is separate (commonly 02 8448 0406 — verify). Camping — Discovery Parks only

Discovery Parks – Lane Cove, 13 Plassey Road, Macquarie Park NSW 2113. Tent / campervan / caravan sites, cabins and glamping options are commonly marketed (~206 sites reported — [VERIFY]). Book via Discovery Parks website or 02 9888 9133 (commonly 9.30am–4.30pm daily — verify). No bush camping elsewhere in the national park. Crosslands Reserve is a separate outside option — note but plan via official sources. Park entry is commonly described as not required solely for tourist-park access; fees apply when visiting other park areas — verify official wording.

The weir and picnic lawns are not a service centre. Chatswood, Macquarie Park, North Ryde, Lane Cove and Lindfield hold the practical fuel, food and pharmacy density for most visitors. Spring: wildflowers and new growth. Autumn: crisp picnic weather. Summer: ~20–27 °C typical, can hit high 40s — shaded trails usable, peak local use. Winter: ~5–17 °C, quieter, good for longer walks. Heavy weekend / public-holiday / school-holiday crowds at the weir and main carparks; weekdays quieter.
