Park overview & areas

Lane Cove National Park protects a Lane Cove River valley corridor of bush, picnic lawns, heritage fabric and long-distance track links inside metro Sydney — roughly 10–11 km north-west of the CBD. We acknowledge the Cammeraygal / Cameraygal, Wallumedegal and Durramurragal peoples as Traditional Custodians of this Country. This guide does not retell restricted sacred stories.

Most successful first visits balance early parking, a short Heritage Walk or Fiddens Wharf circuit, and a picnic at a major lawn — not a forced 20 km Great North Walk section on arrival. Use this hub to pick a focus, then verify conditions on the official NSW National Parks park page.

Recommended order: Park’nPay + status check → weir / Heritage Walk orientation → picnic claim → Riverside Track segment only if energy allows → Great North Walk day section when ready → Discovery Parks overnight if booked commercially (no bush camping).

Commandment Rock picnic area lawn and bush, Lane Cove National Park

Named picnic precincts

Best for: Picnics, birthdays (with venue rules), easy nature

The park’s day-use identity is a string of named picnic precincts along the river valley — each with its own parking personality and crowd pattern. High success rate for locals who treat “table + short walk” as a complete national-park day.

Use signed park roads only; follow on-site maps between bays rather than inventing shortcuts.
