Lane Cove National Park walks & tracks

Start with a clear heritage / picnic vs longer valley walk decision. The Heritage Walk + a picnic lawn covers most first metro visits. Distances, grades and times below are planning ranges — always confirm on NSW National Parks and check RFS fire danger. Leave margin for weekend parking peaks and post-rain mud.

First visit / mixed group

Heritage Walk or Fiddens Wharf circuit + picnic lawn. Skip full GNW day sections. Demote to sealed picnic circuits after heavy rain.

Want more after the weir

Add a short Riverside Track segment only if cool, fit and parking still works. One moderate add-on beats two rushed ones.

Long day or overnight base

GNW sections need early starts and offline maps. Overnight only at Discovery Parks – Lane Cove (booked commercially) — never bush camp in the park.

Walks FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

What is the best first walk in Lane Cove?

Most first-timers start with the Heritage Walk (Fiddens Wharf toward the weir) or a short Fiddens Wharf circuit, then claim a picnic lawn. Riverside Track segments are easy upgrades when energy and mud allow. Great North Walk day sections are for fit groups with early starts — not automatic first-hour stacks. Always verify track status with NSW National Parks.

How hard are the walks?

Heritage Walk, Fiddens Wharf circuits and picnic-area short walks are easy planning walks when open (still real bush: roots, mud, wildlife). Riverside Track is easy–moderate by segment. Pennant Hills fire trail is moderate shared-use country. Great North Walk Lane Cove corridor sections are the committing day option — multi-hour terrain with water and daylight honesty. Verify grades on official sources.

Can I do the Heritage Walk and a full Great North Walk section on the same day?

Usually a bad first-visit plan. Heritage Walk + picnic already fills a satisfying half-day with parking and crowds. Adding a long GNW section is how groups burn daylight and patience. Pick one hero focus, or keep the day to heritage/riverside and save GNW for a dedicated early start.

Do gate hours affect every walk?

Vehicle access and park gate hours can affect car-based visits across the river corridor — screenshot official gate hours for your date. Walking or cycling in is commonly free of vehicle entry fees but still subject to park rules and temporary closures. Always verify live access on the official Lane Cove park page.
