This plan is for visitors who want overnight convenience without inventing bush camps. Discovery Parks – Lane Cove (13 Plassey Road, Macquarie Park) is the practical base: book on their site or phone (commonly 02 9888 9133 — verify hours), then treat GNW sections as separate day logistics with water, maps and weather discipline.

Who should pick this: multi-day walkers, families wanting cabins/glamping options, and anyone stacking two park days without re-driving from the CBD each morning. Who should pick something else: day-trippers only, or anyone expecting free bush camping inside the national park (there is none).

What to verify: Discovery Parks availability and rules; whether park entry fees apply when you leave the tourist park to visit other park areas; NPWS alerts; and realistic day-section distances — not “the whole ~20 km because we’re already here.”

Demotion culture: a booked cabin night + short Heritage picnic is still a valid multi-day visit if legs or weather fail. Forcing a hero GNW section in heat is not.

Track status, gate hours, fire danger and weather change — verify on NSW National Parks and RFS before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. Park entry and Discovery Parks bookings are never affiliated on this site.

Weir & swimming: do not cross the weir when water is flowing over it. Swimming is not recommended (snags, hazards, catchment pollutants — official signage applies). After heavy rain, demote muddy sections early.

Timeline

Times are planning ranges for an honest metro day — not a race clock. Protect decision gates written into each block.

  1. Day 0 afternoon–evening

    Check-in · gear layout · alerts

Arrive Discovery Parks with bookings confirmed offline. Layout next-day walk kit (water, shoes, first aid, offline maps). Screenshot park alerts and tomorrow’s weather. Confirm tourist-park vs day-area fee rules before you plan a weir picnic as an add-on.

  2. Day 1 morning

GNW day section (south or north)

Pick one clear section with entry/exit plan — do not attempt the full ~20 km unless fit, trained and weather-perfect. Follow Great North Walk signage; turn back at flooded crossings. Carry 2 L+ water in heat. Tell someone your plan.

  3. Day 1 afternoon

    Reset at tourist park

Showers, food, tick check, early night. Optional short weir picnic only if energy remains — do not stack hero kilometres after a long section.

  4. Day 2 morning (optional)

Heritage / picnic easy day or second section

Easy Heritage Walk + picnic is a valid “active recovery” day. Second GNW section only if legs and weather stay honest. Exit with traffic buffer if driving back to the CBD.

Parking & access tips

  • Tourist-park parking rules differ from picnic bays — follow site instructions.
  • For day walks, use signed park carparks only; do not invent roadside parking.
  • Macquarie Park base is not the same logistics map as Riverside Drive picnic bays — allow transfer time.
  • School holidays book early for cabins and popular sites.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Forcing full ~20 km in heat or after heavy rain
  • Bush camping anywhere in the national park
  • Stacking two hard sections on Day 1
  • Ignoring flooded creek crossings

Extra tips

Decision gates

  • No confirmed Discovery Parks booking → do not invent a bush camp; day-trip instead.
  • Flooded crossings or severe weather → cancel the section; easy picnic day is still success.
  • Anyone heat-stressed mid-section → turn around early; tourist park is the recovery base.
  • Ego “we paid for two nights so we must do 20 km” → reject; quality over distance.

What success looks like

  • Safe commercial overnight with no illegal camping.
  • One honest day section completed with water left.
  • Tick checks done; wildlife not fed.
  • Optional recovery day that the whole group still enjoys.

Booking honesty

  • Book Discovery Parks directly — this site never affiliates tourist-park stays.
  • Park entry fees and Park’nPay remain official-only.
  • Crosslands Reserve is a separate outside option — plan via official sources if relevant; not detailed here.
