Great North Walk — Lane Cove section

Great North Walk corridor · Grade 3 [VERIFY official notes] · 6–8 hours one-way full section; break into day sections · ~20 km one-way East Ryde / Buffalo Creek to Thornleigh [VERIFY]

The serious long walk through the Lane Cove River valley: sandstone, valley forest, mangroves, lookouts and well-signposted Great North Walk (GNW) arrows. Break into day sections; overnight at Discovery Parks – Lane Cove is the practical base. Not a casual picnic add-on.

Do not pair: Do not stack full GNW one-way + Heritage Walk interpretive pace + multi-lawn picnic hop on day one. Section hike days are their own product; culture corridor is a separate easy day.

Turnaround: Name the bailout car park and the latest acceptable reverse time before you leave the trailhead. Creek up after rain, or water under 1 L with hours still on the clock → reverse or cut to the nearest signed exit. Official alerts and on-track diversion tape beat yesterday’s blog.

  • Treating the published ~20 km Lane Cove section as a spontaneous add-on after Heritage Walk + picnic — heat, steps and creek risk stack until dusk arrives with no buffer.
  • One-car full one-way without a verified public-transport exit or booked Discovery Parks overnight — you finish strong on the trail and weak on the pickup.
  • Grade 3 [VERIFY official notes]
  • 6–8 hours one-way full section; break into day sections
  • ~20 km one-way East Ryde / Buffalo Creek to Thornleigh [VERIFY]
  • Effort: hard
  • Best for: Fit walkers, multi-day section hikers, overnight Discovery Parks bases

Distance, grade, time, open/closed status, gate hours and conditions change — always verify with NSW National Parks (nationalparks.nsw.gov.au) before you go.

Where you start

East Ryde / Buffalo Creek southern approaches or Thornleigh northern approaches (confirm signed GNW)

The Lane Cove section of the Great North Walk is commonly described as roughly 20 km one-way between East Ryde / Buffalo Creek and Thornleigh contexts. Always verify current track notes, diversions and grade language on NSW National Parks / official GNW sources before you commit. One car means planning public transport exits or out-and-back day sections.

How to get there

  1. Southern access often via East Ryde / Buffalo Creek / Sugarloaf Point contexts; northern via Pennant Hills / Thornleigh approaches — confirm trailheads on official maps. Sugarloaf carpark itself is closed per NPWS — do not treat it as a trailhead bay.
  2. Discovery Parks – Lane Cove (13 Plassey Road, Macquarie Park) is the classic overnight base for multi-day section walkers — book directly with Discovery Parks; not affiliated here.
  3. Carry full day-walk kit: 2 L+ water per person in heat, layers, headlamp buffer, offline maps, first aid.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Do not attempt the full ~20 km as an impulse add-on after a picnic. Pick a day section with clear entry/exit and bailout car parks.
  2. Follow Great North Walk signage; stay on marked public tracks.
  3. Creek crossings (weir area and further north) can be impassable after heavy rain — check alerts and recent conditions.
  4. If overnighting, book Discovery Parks in advance and confirm whether park entry fees apply when visiting other park areas beyond the tourist park access.
  5. Tell someone your plan; reception is patchy in parts of the valley.

What to expect

This is the fitness and logistics upgrade of Lane Cove National Park. Sandstone steps, valley forest, mangrove edges and management-trail junctions all appear along the route. Navigation is generally well signposted, but you still need a map and an honest turnaround plan.

Success looks like a completed day section with water remaining and a calm exit — not a GPS track that proves you “did the whole thing” while dehydrated at dusk.

Overnight reality: Discovery Parks – Lane Cove is the commercial base; there is no bush camping elsewhere in the national park. Book Discovery Parks directly — never affiliated here. Confirm whether park entry fees apply when you leave the tourist-park access to walk other park areas.

Extra tips

  • Autumn and cooler spring days are kinder for long sections.
  • Split south–weir and north–fire-trail days rather than forcing a single epic if fitness is untested.
  • Pair with shorter Heritage Walk only on a separate easy day — do not stack culture + 20 km.

Often paired with Pennant Hills fire trail— only if energy and weather allow.
