Lane Cove National Park Practical Planner

Heritage Walk vs picnic vs Great North Walk · Park’nPay · gates · weir safety · packing · official NSW National Parks links

Back to maps Plan your visit
Vehicle entry is usually paid via official Park’nPay / NSW National Parks channels (planning figure at research time ~$8/day vehicle — always verify live fees). Walking/cycling in is commonly free. Park’nPay and Discovery Parks bookings are never affiliated on this site.

1. Before you leave base

2. Day visit vs overnight (pick one primary path)

Day trip (most first-timers)

  • [ ] Early parking at weir / Riverside Drive / picnic bay
  • [ ] Heritage Walk or Fiddens Wharf circuit
  • [ ] Picnic lawn claim (Commandment Rock, Cottonwood Glen, etc.)
  • [ ] Optional boatshed/cafe only if hours confirmed
  • [ ] Partial day = successful day

Overnight (Discovery Parks only)

  • [ ] Discovery Parks – Lane Cove booking confirmed (13 Plassey Rd, Macquarie Park)
  • [ ] Phone / website hours verified
  • [ ] Next-day GNW or Heritage plan with water & maps
  • [ ] No bush camping inside the national park
  • [ ] Park entry rules for day areas verified if leaving tourist park

3. Decision tree — pick your day

First visit / half day Early arrival → short Heritage Walk or Fiddens circuit → picnic. Skip full Great North Walk sections.
Family / low energy One picnic bay + short sealed/easy circuits only. Water-dragon spotting from a respectful distance. Leave while winning.
History-focused Slow Heritage Walk: Fiddens Wharf → Baker’s Cottage → Schwartz Homestead context → Jenkins Kitchen → weir. Interpretive pace, not kilometres.
Active full day Longer Riverside segment + optional boatshed/cafe. Confirm commercial hours independently. Do not stack 20 km GNW after a huge picnic.
GNW section day / multi-day Pick one honest day section with entry/exit plan. Discovery Parks base for overnight. Creek crossings can fail after heavy rain.
Demote the plan if… Elevated fire danger, park alerts, heat stress, full carparks, flooded crossings, exhausted group. Sealed picnic circuit or go home winners.

4. Weir, gates & urban-edge safety

Do not cross the weir when water is flowing over it. Swimming is not recommended (snags, hazards, catchment pollutants — official signage applies). This is urban-edge bush: snakes, ticks, slippery rock after rain, patchy reception. Gates can close for weather/fire. This planner is not a live closure feed.

5. Classic day skeleton — Heritage + picnic

Timing (typical)

  • Early: Park’nPay + alerts + water
  • Morning: Heritage Walk / Fiddens circuit
  • Midday: picnic claim + shade
  • Optional: short riverside add-on only if energy remains
  • Exit: before peak traffic if you have appointments

Success metrics

  • Whole group finishes safely and calmly
  • Did not force a 20 km GNW after a picnic
  • Turned around if mud / heat / fatigue demanded
  • Left no rubbish; wildlife not fed

6. Packing — day visitor baseline

7. Packing — overnight at Discovery Parks (extra)

8. Cultural respect & wildlife

9. Official links (verify live)

10. On-site itineraries (full timelines)
