Lane Cove National Park is famous among locals for eastern water dragons along the river corridor. You will also see kookaburras, lorikeets, waterbirds and — if you are lucky or careful — lace monitors and other bush wildlife. This is still real bush sitting inside metro Sydney.

Water dragons

Dragons often bask on warm rock and path margins near the river. Photograph from a stable public path. Do not corner, touch or bait animals for photos. If a dragon moves into cover, that is success — not a prompt to follow.

Snakes, ticks and honest hazards

Red-bellied black snakes and occasional browns are present in the broader region’s bush. Leave snakes alone. Wear closed shoes, stay on tracks, and check for ticks after walks. Patchy reception means the Emergency+ app is sensible kit.
