Picnic-area short walks (Commandment Rock, Cottonwood Glen, Casuarina Point)

The highest-success pattern for many locals: pick one major picnic area (Commandment Rock, Cottonwood Glen, Casuarina Point, Jenkins Hill, Carter Creek, Tunks Hill, Bakers Flat), walk short river or bush edges, then reclaim the table. Urban-edge national park done properly.
Do not pair: Do not pair “see every picnic area” with a Great North Walk day section. One lawn + one short walk is the product; culture corridor upgrades are optional and separate.
Turnaround: If the first-choice bay is full, pick the next signed picnic carpark within a few minutes — do not invent verge parking. Walk short, eat, leave. Gate hours still apply even on “just a picnic” days.
- Arriving after 10–11am on a sunny weekend to a full Commandment Rock / weir-adjacent bay → circling and frustration instead of claiming a quieter Plan B lawn.
- Multi-area hop with no table claim first → walking hungry kids between full lawns while the simple “one bay” plan would have worked.
- Easy short walks [VERIFY]
- 20–60 minutes plus picnic time
- Short links between lawns and river edges
- Effort: easy
- Best for: Families, first visits, low-commitment nature + lunch
Distance, grade, time, open/closed status, gate hours and conditions change — always verify with NSW National Parks (nationalparks.nsw.gov.au) before you go.

Where you start
Your chosen picnic-area car park
Each picnic precinct has its own car park personality and facility mix. Confirm toilets, BBQs and any venue-hire rules on the official park page. Groups of 30+ need written approval — contact the park office.
How to get there
- Use signed park roads only. Max Allen Road / Lady Game Drive for north-side office approaches; Riverside Drive for many southern picnic bays.
- Gates: [VERIFY] commonly cited as ~9am–7pm daylight saving / 9am–6pm otherwise — can close for weather / fire danger. Always check official alerts.
How to do it (step by step)
- Arrive early, claim a table, set water and shade first.
- Do a short signed walk before or after eating — not a forced multi-area hop.
- Supervise children near river edges and rocks.
- Leave no trace; pack out rubbish.

Extra tips
- Commandment Rock is a classic high-demand lawn on fine weekends.
- Venue hire for picnic areas is separate via NPWS (commonly 02 8448 0406 — verify).
Often paired with Riverside Track— only if energy and weather allow.
